Industry Taking Action

Polling undertaken in 2013 showed that only 54% of people feel confident in accessing digital entertainment and only 55% think it's easy to tell which sites provide legal or illegal content online. Interestingly, this lack of confidence to disinguish between legal and illegal content online is more prevalent among females (47% against 33% of male).

Over the years, industry has come up with a number of initiatives to support consumers online.

  • The Alliance, along with other trade associations, launched The Content Map in November 2012 to help consumers find safe, legal digital services in books, TV & film, music, sports and video games.
  • Find Any Film allows users to find out where they can download, stream or buy any film online.

Industry is also working with partners in local authorities to help protect consumers in the physical sale of goods.

  • Websites selling counterfeit goods but which are branded to seem like they are legitimate retailers have a serious impact on consumer confidence. Brand-i tackles this issue by providing a searchable list of legitimate branded good retailers.
  • The Real Deal Markets campaign seeks to tackle the problem of counterfeit goods in the UK's markets. The sale of counterfeit goods in local markets has been linked to other criminal and anti-social behaviour. Over 340 markets have now signed to the Real Deal Charter, which demonstrates an organisation's commitment to safe and fair trading in their local market.

The UK's design industry is also affected by IP theft. Anti Copying in Design, a membership trade association for designers, has created ACID Marketplace, a safe online platform for designers and design buyers to register and view designs with confidence.
